What Is Sitemap

  • A sitemap is literally a map of your website, that's designed to tell the search engine what pages on your website are new, or updated, and are available for crawling.
  • It is a great way of letting Google know that you have added new web pages that need to be crawled. Rather than submitting a URL to google each time you add a page, update your XML sitemap is much easier.
  • Though adding a sitemap doesn't guarantee that your page will be indexed or will rank higher in the search engine result page, it helps in letting Google spiders find your web pages easily.

Types of Sitemap

1) XML Sitemap: Sitemap is an XML file that holds a complete list of page URLs for a site along with other additional details (metadata of each URLs, when it was last updated etc.). Its primary purpose is to inform search engines about pages on your sites that are available for crawling.

Say your website has 1,000 pages. But remember, Google is going to use your XML sitemap only as a clue to what's important on your site. Just because it's not in your XML sitemap doesn't necessarily mean that Google won't index those pages. When it comes to SEO, overall site quality is a key factor.
